Absol standing on a mountain peak.

It appears when it senses an impending natural disaster.

As a result, it was mistaken as a doom bringer.

pokemon y dex entry

A panning shot that goes right to left from May's pokedex to Absol standing in a river.

Absol is a quadrupedal, mammalian Pokémon with a primarily white body with some dark blue coloration.
It has a ruff around its neck and chest and a tuft on the top of its head adorned with a single blue-black oval. Between the dark fur, the curvature of the white fur on its head, and the positioning of its horn, Absol's face vaguely resembles a wu wei symbol.
It has a feline face with almond-shaped, red eyes, a scythe-like tail, and a scythe-shaped horn on the side of its head. Its broad feet are equipped with three claws each, and dewclaw-like spikes protrude from the heels of its hind legs and the elbows of its front legs. It walks with a pacing gait like that of a bear.

Absol lives in the mountains far from civilization, and it rarely ventures down from its alpine home. Using its horn, Absol is able to sense even subtle changes in the sky and the land to predict when a disaster will occur and will try to warn people when one is approaching. Absol is also known to protect fields from natural disasters as well.
This often has the unfortunate effect of Absol itself being blamed for the disaster, notably by the elderly. The hatred for Absol was started years ago by superstitions surrounding about it. Despite this, others are interested in its ability to predict disaster.
Absol has been referred to as a bringer of doom. Absol can move as swiftly as the wind. Absol is said to have a lifespan of up to 100 years.

ah, absol; the disaster pokemon. #359 in the national dex, introduced in ruby and sapphire in 2002. (oh hey, it was the 10th anniversary just last year!)
is it bad to say i've never actually played any of the gen 3 games? i'd really like to, though, sometime. just not sure which one i'd pick...

i couldn't really tell you exactly when or how absol came to be my favorite. first it was samurott, then it was mudkip, and now absol. granted, samurott and mudkip are still favorites, among others, they just aren't The Ultimate Favorite like they used to be.
their lore does make me feel sympathetic and like going-to-bat for them, especially when you see characters diving head-first into the superstitions, but it's also just got a solid design. sharp AND fluffy at the same time. very dignified looking. big enough that it could comfortably sleep on the bed with you & snuggle without being TOO big. also the whole 'flat/humanoid-like face on a quadruped body' just never fails to be a super distinct look.
i'm not even a huge fan of blues but i still prefer its normal appearance over its shiny just because of my first absol, and i like being reminded of him LOL.

speaking of my first absol, Kaus, it definitely helped that i got him in y, and was obsessed with amie. being able to play with him and have our bond be reflected in battles was HUGE in me becoming even more attached.
i mean, i already was, since i specifically asked a friend of my sister's if he could trade me one once i started, but, well, actually having him and battling with him in game just set things in stone. especially considering what a godsdamn powerhouse he was by endgame.

it's been almost a decade or so now, and at this point--especially since i'm not interested whatsoever in the newer games as of late--i'm pretty sure this one's for good for this time.

Animated overworld sprite of Absol.
