i've been interested in doll customization since i was a young teenager. i loved watching people on youtube finding dolls at thrift stores, or buying cheap parts online to put together, and giving them a complete makeover. the ones where they took the og and gave them a redesign were fun, but my favorites were when they went above and beyond to turn them into something else entirely, and seeing the PROCESS for exactly how they went about doing it. i would always think about what i might do, if confronted with a super cheap doll with little-to-nothing wrong with it, and endless possibilities waiting.
mostly, i would think about all of my OCs that i would want to have as dolls, not realizing just how much work it would take to do.. all of that. LOL
admittedly, i wasn't very involved in specifically ABJDs; most of the people i watched dealt with american fashion dolls, like MH, since they were easy to get ahold of. but i WAS aware of them. specifically i would occasionally see someone with a very well-decorated Volks doll and look at them with bigly starry eyes, knowing that that thang was Expensive with a captial E.

fast forward to now, the year 2026, and i'm finally dipping my own toes into the hobby after years of merely watching from the sidelines. after refreshing myself of knowledge and doing some poking around, i decided that my first foray would be a nendoroid head with a nendo-compatible BJD body, as that was among the cheaper options and i didn't want to go in guns blazing. also, nendos and nendo-adjacent things are small, which i definitely wanted to start off with rather than something the size of a toddler. (no offense meant at all of course, i just don't have the room 😭)
sometime in the future when i've got a bit more space, though, i wouldn't be opposed to it. like i said, the ultimate dream would be to have dolls to represent at least some of my most beloved OCs, which i would probably want something a bit bigger than 1/12 for. not to mention the possibility of maybe one day having an official Dollfie of my own...it's not something that i'm going to be actively hunting for any time soon, but definitely a big checklist item.

(i wouldn't tell anybody i won the lottery... but there would be signs.)
